On various releases, it is stated as being recorded in New Orleans in an unspecified year, or at the Catalyst Club in Santa Cruz, California in 1977, or at the Boarding House in San Francisco, California in 1977. A performance of "Big Chief" is labeled as "The Banana Boat Song" on some releases.

Studio recordings from Professor Longhair's first recording session in 1949 appear as bonus tracks.
